Young Archaeologists' Club

Interested in Archaeology?

Want to get to know more about local history?

Aged 9-16?

Join the Young Archaeologists' Club (YAC) at the Pumphouse.

A new service, the YAC is a Saturday morning club for 9-16 year olds run from the Pumphouse Educational Museum. It is designed to help give young people a 'sense of place' by introducing them to the history and archaeology of the area. Held once a month, it aims to help provide a grounding in archaeology for young people.

At the YAC, members will learn how real archaeologists' work; how they prepare, the tools they use, how to identify finds, and how to record them for further investigation.

Both YAC leaders are experienced archaeologists and have taken part in many digs in the London area. The Pumphouse YAC has access to a wide range of artefacts to examine and understand. Many were found on the Thames foreshore including; clay pipes, musket balls, coins and bottles. These artefacts can tell us how people lived in the past.

Pumphouse YAC activities will involve both on site sessions and visits to local places of interest. If you are 9-16, or know someone who is, the YAC is a great place to make new friends and learn how to unravel the secrets of history.

You might also want to consider joining the national organisation. Individual membership costs £7.50 per year. Members receive 4 Young Archaeologist magazines, membership certificate, a badge and a card giving discounted entry to museums and archaeological centres. For further details contact YAC, Bowes Morrell House, 111 Walmgate, York YO1 9WA, telephone 01904 671 417 or email yac@britarch.ac.uk
